Market Day

Mina Samuels

As bookworm Liza and her workaholic husband Marc wind up their annual vacation in the south of France, even the idyll of St. Tropez can’t quite cover up the fault lines in their relationship. As the couple move through the last hours of their holiday, Liza negotiates the delicate web of dependencies that compose their marriage: his reliance on Liza’s fluent French; her reliance on Marc to navigate St. Tropez; the volatility of Marc’s unpredictable moods. In “Market Day,” Samuels gently, almost tangentially, immerses the reader in Liza’s loneliness inside her marriage. The story explores a woman’s ability to manage the intricate balance of her independent self, the subtext of a couple and her natural desire to please, to resolve, to nurture.

Paper Aperture and Other Poems

Gwen North Reiss

Author Gwen North Reiss was drawn to poetry early on because of the way a poem does its work—in a waterfall of words where language and form work with and against each other. The lines of her poems are always alert to the constant surprise of being alive. Two of the poems in this collection fall into the category of ekphrasis; in another, the ode meets up with a kitchen appliance. While Reiss sometimes works in traditional form, the closest thing in these poems to a traditional form is the found dress with its layers and wire structure and the house where it was left behind. “When it was new, my life” allows her to avoid a summing up and to move around within a succession of impressions and experiences. “Telling

Fractals

Vanessa Gennarelli

Fractals is a collection of four poems about patterns in human behavior at a stratospheric level, poetry about how scientific concepts explain those patterns. A social scientist working at the intersection of cryptocurrency and global development, Gennarelli and her poetry respond to these patterns and to science. She writes about the technological components that hold our lives – geotagged images, restrictive menu defaults, distributed databases – and how they render an observer data. These data can be dehumanizing, abstract, analyzable, arguably inaccurate, but for Gennarelli, data becomes the raw basis for poetry. In Fractals, she brings us a poetry of crowd-funding, DNA testing, dark matter. Human data tells a story; science informs that story.

Selected Poems

Lauren Amalia Redding

An artist and a poet, Lauren Amalia Redding turns to words to explore origins: the cultural vacillations of her life between a Midwestern father and a Cuban mother; her discovery of an emancipated self; and deeper, sometimes fearful, reflections of the most intimate relationships. Limpid and profound, Redding’s poems reveal an artist’s eye and a writer’s questioning drive, and the powerful voice of a young woman coming to terms with a fractured world. Recording how images correspond to her content or how she associates images with the emotion at hand, Redding writes as she sees.

Castle Peak

Mina Samuels

Liv’s solitary and self-sufficient life is put to the test when she injures herself on the Castle Peak trail in the Sierra mountains during an early morning run. With her phone dead and a surprise early November snow falling, Liv fights against her own nature and the elements to get down the mountain. Author Mina Samuels – herself a runner – shows us the loneliness inherent in today’s lean-in working woman’s culture, and how mental and physical strength co-exist alongside the ability to navigate the subtext of the world. Short, chilling, memorable, Castle Peak immerses the reader in the fundamental interiority of a woman’s experience.
