Route 66 by: Harriet Slaughter
There was a time my butt was hard
Route 66 was long and tarred.
Past Wigwam Village, those motor courts,
Painted Desert and Injun forts,
old mining towns on wind- swept roads
westward bound the sun explodes
in reds so brilliant to the eyes
the ridge beyond was no surprise.
A biker’s ride along this route
gas pedal down for a break out --
from city living to slower pace,
At last, at last a breathing place.
The Mother Road dust bowlers traveled
and looking back my life unraveled
down that center line unfolds
a life crossing many thresholds.
Route 66 was long and tarred
there was a time my butt was hard.
