Pen and Brush Presents…December
Pen and Brush Presents… is a new reading series curated by Kate Angus for Pen and Brush. The series supports the work small press editors in identifying excellent writing, as well as supporting the writing itself by featuring exciting new work by established and emerging authors. Each month, “Pen and Brush Presents…” will feature readings by three writers, each one selected by editors at a press, journal, or organization with a strong female editorial presence.
Join us for the fourth reading of the series in our fall season, featuring the work of:
Christine Malvasi, representing 7x7. Christine Malvasi graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University and earned her MFA in Creative Writing from New York University, where she is currently on faculty in the Expository Writing Department. She has received NYU's Willy Gorrissen Award for Excellence in Teaching, and grants and residencies from Poets & Writers, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Princeton-in-Asia Program in Singapore, among others. In 2017, she will be a faculty fellow at NYU Florence and a Visiting Scholar at the American Academy of Rome in Italy. She is the editor of Challenges for the Delusional, an anthology of writing exercises and the poems they inspired. A graduate of the William Esper Studio Meisner Conservatory Program, she is also an actor and musician who has performed throughout New York City.
Melinda Wilson, representing Dancing Girl Press. Melinda Wilson holds a BA from the University of New Hampshire, an MFA from The New School, and a PhD from Florida State University, where she studied poetry and feminist theory and poetics. Melinda is the author of AMPLEXUS (2010), a chapbook from Dancing Girl Press, and other poems, which have appeared in journals such as Cincinnati Review, Rattapallax, Diner, Arsenic Lobster, Verse Daily, Agriculture Reader, Burnside Review and Valley Voices. Melinda is Co-Founder and current Managing Editor of Coldfront Magazine, a poetry review journal established in 2006. Originally from New Hampshire, Melinda lives in Upper Manhattan with her husband John Deming and their two dogs.
Wendy Xu, representing Fence. Wendy Xu is the author of Phrasis (Fence Books Ottoline Prize, 2017) and You Are Not Dead (Cleveland State University Poetry Center, 2013), which was profiled by Poets & Writers Magazine as one of the year’s best debuts. She was awarded the Patricia Goedicke Prize in Poetry in 2011, and a Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation in 2014. Her poems have appeared (or are forthcoming) in The Best American Poetry, Boston Review, Poetry, A Public Space, Guernica, and widely elsewhere. She is Poetry Editor for Hyperallergic.
Kate Angus is a founding editor of Augury Books. Her work has appeared in The Atlantic, The Awl, Best New Poets 2010 and Best New Poets 2014. Her poetry collection, So Late to the Party, was published by Negative Capability Press in June.
